The mortal remains of Sudhir Narwal and Mohit Chauhan, among the 10 soldiers who lost their lives after an Army vehicle plunged into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district, were cremated with full state honours at their native places in Haryana on Saturday.
They were accompanied by vehicles donned with the Indian flag and the public on foot to honour their contribution for the nation.
On Friday, a wreath-laying ceremony was held for the 10 army jawans who died in an accident in Doda district. As many as 11 personnel sustained injuries during the mishap.
The Army’s armoured vehicle was carrying troops for an anti-terror operation when it met with the accident on Thursday. The incident occurred at the 9,000-foot-high Khanni top along the Bhaderwah–Chamba interstate road around noon, when the driver of the bulletproof Casspir vehicle lost control and the vehicle fell into a 200-foot-deep gorge.
Narwal’s last rites were performed at Sherpur village in Yamunanagar district, while Chauhan was cremated at Gijarodh village in Jhajjar district.
Residents of the village started chanting slogans of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” when Narwal’s body reached Sherpur. His family members were inconsolable as villagers gathered to pay their last respects to the martyr.
Large numbers of mourners were present to bid a final farewell to the soldier. Narwal’s four-year-old son lit the funeral pyre in the presence of Haryana minister Shyam Singh Rana, former minister Kanwar Pal Gurjar, senior leaders, administrative officers, and Army officials. Rana said that Narwal’s death was a great loss to the state.
In Jhajjar, mourners paid their last respects to Chauhan, aged 26. His younger brother lit the funeral pyre amid slogans of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and “Mohit amar rahe.”
Chauhan, who joined the Army five years ago, is survived by his parents, wife, and brother. He had last visited his home in November.
