The district administration has initiated the process of attaching properties worth over Rs 10 crore belonging to the family of suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir’s daughter’s in-laws in connection with a long-standing drug case, police sources said.

Kabir, who recently floated a new political party ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, has been making headlines amid shifting political alliances. The latest development has added to the political tensions in the district.

According to police sources, property worth Rs 10.73 crore has been ordered to be attached. The family is facing several cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Charges were filed against Kabir’s daughter’s father-in-law and his brother in a drug case registered in March 2025. Based on that case, the court granted permission to attach their properties.

Police said action began soon after the order was received, with forces deployed outside the family’s residence.

District police sources said properties linked to the family have been identified at 10 locations in Murshidabad. The daughter’s father-in-law alone is said to have assets in 17 places, including Lalgola.

Kabir’s daughter, Najma Sultana, alleged the move was politically motivated and blamed the TMC.

“This is a conspiracy. My father is being targeted, and now they are targeting me because they could not get him,” she said. She claimed her father-in-law was not involved in any illegal activity and that her husband was a businessman.

The BJP also alleged political motives, claiming the issue had been suppressed when Kabir was with the TMC and that action was being taken only after he left the party.

TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, however, rejected the allegations, saying the case was old and based on a court order.

“The case has been going on for a long time. Playing the victim card will not help. This is not linked to his recent political moves,” he said.

With the state heading towards Assembly elections, the property attachment in the drug case has further heated the political atmosphere in the district.
