A 30-year-old man from Assam lost his life during a drunken brawl among roommates in the Transport Nagar area of Kota late Thursday night. Two individuals, including the victim's roommates, have been arrested in connection with the fatal altercation, police said on Friday.
The deceased, identified as Paranjeet, was allegedly stabbed in the back by one of the accused, Vishavjeet (22), during a heated argument at their shared accommodation.
Vishavjeet’s brother, Inderjeet (21), was also implicated in the incident, as per the complaint lodged by a fourth roommate, Sidharth, with the Anantpura police.
According to the initial investigation, the four men, all hailing from Kamrup district in Assam, were consuming alcohol when the quarrel broke out. “The two brothers became embroiled in a verbal altercation with Paranjeet. One held him while the other stabbed him with a knife,” Kota City SP Amrita Duhan stated.
During the scuffle, Vishavjeet sustained minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital before being taken into custody. Paranjeet, who worked as a cook in the city, was rushed to New Medical Hospital by fellow occupants of the building but was declared dead upon arrival.
The police were alerted by the hospital authorities, following which Sidharth narrated the events leading up to the incident. “Inderjeet was apprehended while attempting to flee from the Jhalawar Road bypass,” SP Duhan confirmed.
The victim’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and his family in Assam has been informed. The two accused, who had arrived in Kota six months ago for work, are under police interrogation and will be presented in court on Saturday.
This tragic incident highlights the perils of discord among migrant workers who come to urban centres in search of livelihood but face challenges in cohabitation and conflict resolution.
