Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that dual power centres functioning in J&K are detrimental to any government.

 

Abdullah also noted that the government must be allowed to function independently, reflecting the will of people who have voted for their representatives in Jammu and Kashmir.

 

“We want statehood. It is a commitment made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir—not just once, but several times. This promise was made publicly, in Parliament and the Supreme Court. It has been repeatedly assured that full statehood will be restored to Jammu and Kashmir,” Abdullah told reporters on the sidelines of an event.

While responding to a question on restoring statehood and the dual power setup in Jammu and Kashmir, he said dual power centres are not beneficial to any government.

 

No other state in the country functions under such an arrangement. Every state has one power centre, and J&K also deserves the same.

 

“It is the right of Jammu and Kashmir to have its state government. People have elected a government, and it must be allowed to function independently,” he said.

 

Earlier, Pradesh Congress chief in J&K Tariq Hamid Karra also reiterated similar claims; he said that the “dual power centres are not good for the J&K and national interest, urging the central government to speed up the process of restoring statehood in Jammu and Kashmir.
