A woman pilgrim from Rajasthan lost her life and 38 others sustained injuries after a bus carrying devotees overturned following a collision with a dumper truck near the Saptarishi area in Haridwar on Monday morning, police said.
According to officials, the bus was transporting 45 passengers, all of whom were residents of Nagaur district in Rajasthan. The group had travelled to Haridwar to take part in the holy Purnima bathing ritual and was returning home when the accident took place at around 7:15 am near a roadside eatery.
Police said the bus was hit by a dumper truck, causing the vehicle to lose balance and overturn, leading to chaos at the accident site. Senior Superintendent of Police Navneet Singh said rescue teams, along with local residents, quickly rushed to the spot and helped pull out passengers who were trapped inside the overturned bus.

The body of the deceased woman was shifted to the mortuary at the district hospital for post-mortem examination, officials said. Haridwar Sub-Divisional Magistrate Yogesh Mehra stated that authorities ensured swift medical assistance and coordinated relief efforts at the site soon after receiving information about the accident.
Police have seized both the bus and the dumper truck involved in the collision as part of the ongoing investigation into the cause of the accident. Authorities are examining CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts to determine the sequence of events leading to the crash, while further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the probe. The incident has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a spiritual return journey for the pilgrims, turning it into a tragic accident on the highway.
