Authorities in Uttarakhand on Thursday gave in-principle approval to the e-BRT (electric Bus Rapid Transit) system in Dehradun and an integrated ropeway project at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar. The projects aim to create a modern, safe and environment-friendly urban transport system in the state.

The decision was taken during a review meeting of ongoing and proposed projects of the Uttarakhand Metro Rail Corporation (UKMRC). The meeting was headed by the state’s Housing Secretary, R Rajesh Kumar.

UKMRC Managing Director Brajesh Kumar Mishra said in a presentation that the UKMRC board has given in-principle approval for implementing the e-BRT project on two major corridors in Dehradun. He said the project is expected to improve public transport in the city.

Mishra said that instructions have been given to carry out the required studies for the e-BRT project. After the studies are completed, the detailed proposal will be placed before the state cabinet for final approval.

He said the UKMRC board has also passed the proposed integrated ropeway project at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar. A proposal related to the project will be submitted to the competent authority in the near future.

On the proposed ropeway project from Triveni Ghat to Neelkanth Mahadev Temple, Mishra said it has received clearance from the National Wildlife Board. He added that the tender process will begin once the first phase of forest clearance is completed.

The meeting also discussed proposed ropeway projects in Nainital, Kainchi Dham and Mussoorie. Feasibility studies for these projects are currently being carried out by UKMRC.

In addition, officials discussed the possibility of developing a second-level mass transit system in Dehradun to further strengthen urban mobility.
