In a significant achievement for the state's healthcare sector, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has named Kolkata Medical College and Hospital as the best medical research institution in Eastern India. Another major government hospital, SSKM, has secured the second position. Additionally, the Center has acknowledged the state's progress in tuberculosis treatment.

During ICMR's recent evaluation, Kolkata Medical College received a score of 70 per cent, the highest in Eastern India. The assessment was based on research contributions, innovations in medical treatments, and advancements in medical infrastructure. In recognition of its achievements, ICMR has awarded Kolkata Medical College a grant of ₹1.25 crore to further enhance its research capabilities. Furthermore, an additional ₹10 crore has been allocated by the Central Institute of Medical Research for future research projects.

Kolkata Medical College has long played a pioneering role in medical research, making significant contributions in fields such as cardiology, oncology, and infectious diseases.

Superintendent of the healthcare facility Anjan Adhikari expressed his pride in this recognition, saying, “We have been recognised for our dedication to research. Our next goal is to create more opportunities for advanced medical research and achieve global excellence."

SSKM Hospital, another leading government medical institution in Bengal, has also been recognised for its contributions, securing the second spot in ICMR's ranking. Hospital officials have welcomed this recognition, emphasising its importance in fostering medical research and strengthening healthcare infrastructure.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her pride in the achievements of these two institutions. Taking to her X handle , she wrote "I am very happy to know that the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has declared Kolkata Medical College Hospital the Best Research Institution in Eastern India. SSKM Hospital is in the second place. My heartiest congratulations to all concerned!”

She further emphasised, "I have always believed that Bengal has one of the best health infrastructures in the country which is a model for everyone. This recognition only reiterates my belief in our healthcare system. Jai Bangla!” Notably, this recognition follows a review of key research parameters, including the number of research paper published, their impact, and the participation of medical professionals in research activities. Last year, the state’s traditional hospitals received similar accolades primarily for their research work.

Additionally, the Center has lauded the state's impressive progress in tuberculosis treatment under the '100-Day TB-Free India Campaign.'

Mamata, currently in London, acknowledged this achievement on X, stating, "This is a matter of pride for Bengal. Our relentless efforts in expanding healthcare and taking timely measures have yielded success."
