The Election Commission of India instructed the West Bengal Police to compile a log of individuals accused of booth capturing and fraudulent voting in the previous elections to ensure peaceful Lok Sabha elections in the state by curbing violence.
Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ariz Aftab, who held a meeting with district magistrates, district electoral officers, and returning officers on Monday, asked them to review the overall preparations for the elections.
Briefing about the meeting highlights, an official said, "In Monday's meeting, held virtually, discussions were held on the law and order situation in the state and the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct. The commission wants a report within the next 15 days on the action taken against those who have been accused of breaking the law during previous elections".
The election body has also rolled out instructions to the state authorities to persist in efforts to seize illicit weapons. The parliamentary elections in West Bengal are scheduled to take place over seven phases from April 19 to June 1.
