Subrata Gupta, the recently appointed 'Special Roll Observer' (SRO), visited the South 24 Parganas district on Sunday to inspect the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral registers.
Gupta, a retired West Bengal cadre IAS officer, was named 'Special Roll Observer' by the Election Commission on 28 November. His remit is to oversee crucial elements of the electoral roll preparation following the SIR, and to assist the District Election Officers (DEOs) and Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) in implementing remedial actions.
During his visit, Gupta went to Falta in South 24 Parganas district to review the SIR work.
"I am here to oversee whether the SIR process is being followed as per the ECI's directive. There are a few complaints, and we will look into them," said Gupta.
A senior official from the state CEO's office indicated that Gupta is scheduled to hold review meetings with DEOs, EROs, and Booth Level Officers (BLOs) to supervise the distribution and collection of Enumeration Forms (EFs).
The EC had also appointed 12 IAS officers as 'Electoral Roll Observers' to oversee the key facets of the electoral register preparation after the SIR, and to help the DEOs and EROs with corrective measures.
"They are due to examine the route map for EF distribution and collection. There have been allegations of malpractices while completing the EFs, and that the forms are reaching the wrong individuals. These matters will also be verified during the meeting," the official added.
