The Election Commission of India (ECI) has written to the Deputy Commissioner and District Electoral Officer of Bokaro district, instructing them to conduct a probe and take action against Dumri Constituency MLA Jairam Mahto.
Mahto’s party, the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM), has been accused of receiving foreign funds during the recently held assembly elections.
The complaint was filed by Rahul Banerjee, a resident of West Bengal.
The ECI stated in the letter that Banerjee had filed a complaint via email, alleging that JLKM illegally sought foreign funds during the Assembly polls.
The ECI clarified that foreign funds cannot be used in elections, thus constituting a violation of the Model Code of Conduct. The complaint also highlighted that the majority of the foreign funds came from Saudi Arabia.
The complaint includes the QR code and details of the amounts sent, with evidence showing that several individuals residing in Saudi Arabia had sent money to Mahto’s party to support the election campaign.
The names of the senders and the amounts sent are included in the complaint letter.
Additionally, the QR code issued by JLKM to raise foreign funds for the elections is also attached.
Notably, Jairam Mahto won the elections from the Dumri constituency, defeating JMM’s Baby Devi. JLKM performed well in multiple constituencies, contributing to the defeat of NDA candidates.
