ECI orders electoral roll revision in J&K

Revision exercise of the electoral polls is scheduled to start on July 25 and conclude on August 20. Pre-revision activities will take place from June 25 to July 24 in Jammu & Kashmir and the three other states (PTI/FILES).

The Election Commission of India has initiated a special summary revision of electoral rolls in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), with three other states, ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls, officials have said.

The poll body's directive specifies that the special summary revision will be done in J&K, Maharashtra, Haryana, and Jharkhand, where elections are scheduled later this year.

The exercise is meant to maximise the registration of eligible citizens turning 18 on or before July 1, 2024 and keep the list of voters updated.

In a communique sent to J&K's chief electoral officer, the Election Commission stated, "It is to state that the election to the legislative assembly in your state is due to be held later this year, and section 21(2) of the Representation of Peoples Act, 1950, provides that the electoral roll shall be revised concerning the qualifying date before each general election to the Legislative Assembly of a state.

Accordingly, to maximise the registration of all eligible citizens who are attaining the age of 18 years on or before July 1, 2024, and to improve the health of the electoral roll, the Commission has decided to carry out a second summary revision of photo electoral rolls with respect to July 1, 2024, as the qualifying date in your state."

The revision exercise is scheduled to start on July 25 and conclude on August 20. Pre-revision activities will take place from June 25 to July 24 in Jammu & Kashmir and the three other states.

The Supreme Court directed the Election Commission last year to hold assembly elections in J&K by September 30.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed that preparations for the assembly polls have begun.

"The people of Jammu and Kashmir elect their representatives at the local level, through them you find ways to solve problems. What can be better than this? Therefore, now the preparations for the Assembly elections have also started.

“The time is not far when you will elect the new government of Jammu and Kashmir with your votes. That day will also come soon when Jammu and Kashmir will once again make its future better as a state," Modi said.

The Election Commission's efforts ensure a comprehensive and updated electoral roll, facilitating a smooth and democratic election process in the region.
