The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to announce the schedule for by-elections to the Budgam and Nagrota assembly constituencies later in the day, officials said.
The ECI is likely to hold a press conference around 4:00 pm at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, where it will unveil the election timetable for the Bihar Assembly polls as well as by-polls in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir.
The Nagrota seat fell vacant after the demise of BJP leader Davender Singh Rana. According to sources, his daughter is a likely candidate for the seat. The Nagrota assembly seat is expected to witness a direct contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the National Conference-led alliance (NC).
Meanwhile, the Budgam seat, which has remained a stronghold of the National Conference (NC) since the early 1960s, fell vacant after current Chief Minister Omar Abdullah retained his Ganderbal seat, knowing that Budgam has never voted against the NC since then.
Budgam constituency is likely to see a triangular contest involving the NC, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and the People’s Alliance for Change coalition, comprising the People’s Conference, People’s Democratic Front, and Justice and Development Front (JDF).
There has been a long delay in the elections, which has left people of both constituencies without representation in the legislative assembly. There hasn’t been a major announcement of the projects likely to be undertaken by the government in both assembly constituencies since the government was formed in 2024.
The upcoming elections will provide much-needed representation and relief to the people in both constituencies.
