After Rewalsar, another natural lake, Kuntbhayo, located nearby, is struggling to survive. Rewalsar Lake has been facing serious ecological threats for a long time. Rising silt levels and decreasing water depth are believed to be the main reasons behind its deteriorating condition.
So far, no concrete measures have been taken to protect Rewalsar Lake, and now another nearby natural lake is facing a similar threat. Kuntbhayo Lake, located just seven kilometres from Rewalsar, Mandi, is witnessing a steady rise in water level, raising concerns among residents and authorities alike.
During the heavy monsoon spells of 2023 and 2025, the water level of Kuntbhayo Lake rose sharply, forcing several families to leave their homes and seek shelter elsewhere. Although the water receded after the rains stopped, it did not return to its normal level, and the lake continues to remain unusually full.
The situation has now become alarming, as the lake water has reached dangerously close to nearby houses, triggering fear among local residents. People living in the area say the threat of flooding remains high, especially during the next monsoon.
Local residents, including Prem Kumar and Atma Ram Sharma, believe that silt accumulation inside the lake is pushing up the water level. They have urged the government and concerned departments to take timely and effective steps to prevent any future mishap.
Meanwhile, Rakesh Katoch, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Suket Van Mandal, said a scientific study is required to determine the exact reasons behind the rising water level. He further said only after a detailed investigation can an exact conclusion can be drawn.
According to local legends, Kuntbhayo Lake has deep mythological significance. It is believed that during their exile, the Pandavas visited this region. When Mother Kunti felt thirsty and no water was available, Arjuna shot an arrow into the ground, from which water gushed out, forming the lake.
The lake was thus named Kuntbhayo, and a temple dedicated to Mata Kunti stands nearby. The region is home to seven such natural lakes, each holding cultural, religious and ecological importance.
