Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and former minister in Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet, Sujit Bose, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday evening after over 10 hours of questioning in connection with the alleged municipal recruitment corruption case, officials said.
Bose, a former state minister often referred to as the “Dada” of Bidhannagar, had been summoned to the ED’s CGO Complex office earlier in the day. According to ED sources, he was subjected to multiple rounds of interrogation focusing on recruitment lists and suspected financial transactions. Investigators later arrested him, citing alleged inconsistencies in his statements and lack of cooperation during the probe.
The arrest follows an ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities in municipal recruitment, particularly during Bose’s association with the South Dum Dum Municipality. Last year, the ED conducted extensive searches at his residence as part of the case. Officials now claim to have gathered documentary evidence that formed the basis of Monday’s action.

Bose’s arrest adds to a growing list of senior TMC leaders, including Partha Chatterjee and Jyotipriya Mallick, facing legal action by central agencies.
The development comes at a politically sensitive time, with the TMC facing mounting pressure following its defeat in the recent Assembly elections. Bose, considered an influential figure within the party, is seen as a key organisational leader in the Bidhannagar region.
Notably, earlier on Monday, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had reiterated a policy of “zero tolerance” towards corruption at Nabanna, the state secretariat. Within hours of that statement, Bose’s arrest further intensified the political atmosphere in the state.
The ED is expected to produce Bose before a court on Tuesday and seek custody for further interrogation as the investigation continues.
