Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Amanatullah Khan’s residence in Delhi’s Okhla was raided by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday morning as part of an ongoing money-laundering investigation.
Khan, who has been under scrutiny for alleged illegal recruitment and financial misconduct during his tenure as chairman of the Delhi Waqf Board, claimed that the agency was there to arrest him.
The ED’s case against Khan revolves around accusations of illegal recruitment and the leasing of Waqf Board properties from 2018 to 2022, which allegedly resulted in financial gains through illicit means.
According to the ED, Khan generated "huge proceeds of crime" in cash and invested these funds in immovable assets in the name of his associates. The probe agency had earlier interrogated Khan for over 12 hours regarding the case.
Khan posted on X (formerly Twitter), “ED people have just arrived at my house to arrest me.” The video showed heavy security around his residence, with Delhi Police and paramilitary forces stationed outside while ED officials searched the premises, reviewing documents and materials.
AAP leaders quickly condemned the raid, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using central agencies to target their leaders. AAP MP Sanjay Singh accused the government of pursuing a vendetta against Khan, tweeting, “Look at the cruelty of ED @KhanAmanatullah... They reached the house early in the morning to raid. There is no evidence against @KhanAmanatullah, but both Modi's dictatorship and ED's hooliganism continue."
Manish Sisodia, former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, who was recently released on bail in a separate case, also criticised the ED’s actions, saying, "This is the only work left for ED. Suppress every voice raised against BJP. Break it. Arrest and put in jail those who do not break or get suppressed."
Khan himself released a video statement accusing the government of harassing him and other AAP leaders. "Just this morning, on the orders of the dictator, his puppet ED has reached my house.
The dictator is leaving no stone unturned to harass me and AAP leaders. Is it a crime to serve the people honestly?" Khan stated.
The AAP leader’s troubles with the law have been mounting. Earlier this year, the Delhi High Court denied Khan anticipatory bail, citing his repeated evasion of summons from investigative agencies.
The Supreme Court also declined to provide him with protection from arrest.
