A 65-year-old woman was reportedly murdered by her son and daughter-in-law in Faridabad’s Sector 67 area, police said on Monday. The crime was allegedly committed to grab land compensation money belonging to the victim.

After the probe, police registered a murder case at Sadar Ballabgarh police station. The accused daughter-in-law, Poonam, has been apprehended and allegedly confessed to assaulting and strangling her mother-in-law for the compensation amount, officials said.

Police said the victim’s son, Lalit, also helped his wife in committing the crime. The incident took place between 1 pm and 3 pm on March 16 in Machhgar village of Sector 67. Lalit is currently absconding, and police teams are conducting raids to arrest him.

As per the police, the victim, Omwati, had two married sons. She had been living with her elder son Lalit and daughter-in-law Poonam for some time. Her younger son Amit and his wife Mamta live separately in a rented house in Bhikam Colony, Ballabgarh.

Police said around 4 pm on March 16, Mamta received a phone call informing her about Omwati’s death. She alerted the police and claimed that her mother-in-law had earlier expressed fear that Lalit and Poonam might kill her over the compensation money.

A police and forensic team reached the spot and collected evidence. Officials said the victim’s bangles were broken and embedded in her hands, while injury marks were found on her neck and face.

After postmortem examination, the body was handed over to the family. Crime Branch in-charge Ramesh Khatri said Poonam was taken into custody and confessed during interrogation.

Police said Omwati reportedly intended to give the compensation money and the Sector 67 house to her younger son Amit and daughter-in-law Mamta. This led to frequent disputes within the family.

According to investigators, an argument broke out between Poonam and Omwati on March 16. In a fit of rage, Lalit and Poonam allegedly assaulted and strangled her to death. Police said raids are underway to arrest Lalit soon.
