Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has appointed Sanjay Mukherjee as the new Director General of Police (DGP) for West Bengal.

This decision follows the issuance of orders to remove Rajeev Kumar from the aforementioned post.

Notably, Vivek Sahay had initially replaced Kumar as the DGP on Monday.

However, in a subsequent move, the ECI opted for Mukherjee to assume the role.

Sahay's appointment was based on his seniority, but since he is scheduled to superannuate in the final week of May before the Lok Sabha elections conclude, the poll panel named Mukherjee as the DGP, a senior official said.

Mukherjee, a 1989-batch IPS officer, was the second person on the list of the three officers recommended by the West Bengal government for the post of DGP to the EC.

The poll panel directed the state to ensure immediate compliance and confirm the appointment by 5 pm on Tuesday.

The ECI's decision to shuffle top administrative positions comes as part of its stringent measures to ensure a smooth and fair electoral process.

On Monday, the commission had directed the removal of home secretaries from six states, along with the DGP of West Bengal, and secretaries from the general administrative departments of Mizoram and Himachal Pradesh.

This is a developing story...
