The shock defeat in the Jubilee Hills by-election has further deepened the internal crisis in the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). The electoral loss has provided ammunition for K Kavitha, the rebellious daughter of the party supremo K Chandrashekhar Rao, to sharpen her attack on her rivals.
Even as the party is still processing the scale of defeat and its political implications, Kavitha has launched a blistering attack on her brother and the party working president, KT Rama Rao and her cousin and former minister T Harish Rao, accusing them of “misleading” the patriarch and sabotaging the party from within.
Talking to the media during her “Janam Baata” (Mass Outreach) tour in Medak district, she alleged that both leaders had “tied blindfolds” to KCR and encouraged “anarchy and misrule,” ultimately pushing the BRS down from the precipice.
She went a step further and accused Harish Rao of being hand-in-glove with the Chief Minister, A Revanth Reddy, to defame KCR and the BRS. She wondered why no action had been taken against him despite ‘clear evidence’ of corruption.
“Local farmers told me how alignments of the RRR (Regional Ring Road) project were changed to protect lands belonging to Harish Rao and other BRS leaders,” she said.
She also said KTR and Harish Rao “pat each other’s backs” even for a single successful meeting, and pretend as if they carried KCR on their shoulders.
She accused Harish Rao’s supporters of misleading people by proclaiming that “without Harish Rao, there would be no KCR or Telangana movement.”
Kavitha advised KTR to “quit social media and go into the midst of the people,” accusing him of fighting battles only on X instead of addressing ground realities. “Telangana Jagruthi (a cultural organisation she heads) will become a people’s weapon — if BRS doesn’t act like a proper Opposition, we will emerge as the main Opposition,” she declared.
Kavitha alleged that Harish Rao and his wife ran a milk supply business that cornered contracts meant for SC, ST and minority residential schools, bypassing tender norms. “The CM’s PRO tweeted about this in September 2024 — the tweet vanished in four days,” she said.
She accused KTR and Harish Rao of “blindfolding” KCR and promoting corrupt leaders, leading to the party’s downfall. “If KCR comes out again, the situation will change,” she said.
Kavitha was suspended from the party in September after she raised a banner of revolt and targeted her cousins, Harish Rao and former Rajya Sabha member Santosh Rao, accusing them of corruption and internal sabotage.
She was arrested and jailed briefly last year for her alleged role in the Delhi liquor scam. Apparently, she was peeved that the party leadership did not support her fully during the difficult times.
