An elephant calf was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the Tiruldih village area under the Chandil forest range of Seraikela-Kharsawan district in Jharkhand, triggering concern among locals and raising serious questions about possible illegal activities in the region.

The incident came to light late Tuesday night near the Sabha River in Kuiry Tola, following which panic spread across the area. By Wednesday morning, a large number of villagers had gathered at the spot to see the carcass.

According to local residents, the elephant calf was already dead when it was discovered, and the condition of the site has led to multiple suspicions regarding the cause of death.

Preliminary reports suggest that the elephant may have died due to electrocution after coming in contact with a live electric wire. However, officials have not yet confirmed the exact cause, and clarity is expected only after a post-mortem examination.

The site of the incident is reportedly located near a forest patch between Tiruldih and Saparoom villages under Kukru block, an area where large-scale illegal sand storage is alleged to be taking place.

Villagers claim that the location lies along a traditional elephant corridor and resting route, which has been significantly disturbed due to sand dumping and frequent movement of heavy vehicles.

Local residents have further alleged that illegal sand operators may have used unauthorized electric wiring to deter elephants, which could have led to the fatal incident.

They also claimed that the forest department had previously been informed about encroachments and illegal activities in the corridor, but no concrete action was taken.

Forest department officials and police teams rushed to the spot soon after receiving information. A team of veterinary doctors is expected to conduct the post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death.

A senior official stated that a detailed investigation has been initiated, and a report has also been sought from the electricity department. He added that if illegal electrification is confirmed, strict action will be taken under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, including the registration of non-bailable cases against those found responsible.
