A herd of wild elephants created havoc in the Ghato OP area of Ramgarh district in Jharkhand, about 40 km from Ranchi, leaving at least four people dead within a span of a few hours between Tuesday and Wednesday. The series of attacks, allegedly carried out by a herd of around 42 elephants, spread fear across several nearby villages as residents struggled to escape the sudden violence.

The deceased have been identified as Amit Rajwar (33), Amul Mahto (35), Parvati Devi (40) and Savitri Devi (45).

The first fatal incident occurred at around 4 pm on Tuesday near the Ara Number Four Feeder Breaker in West Bokaro. According to locals, people from nearby areas had assembled along the roadside after spotting the elephant herd resting there. Some individuals reportedly ventured too close in an attempt to click photographs and selfies.

During this time, one elephant charged at Amit Rajwar and attacked him brutally, killing him on the spot. Eyewitnesses said the animal repeatedly struck him with its trunk, triggering chaos in the area.

The Ramgarh–Kedla main road was soon blocked as panic spread, forcing several drivers, including those of heavy vehicles, to abandon their vehicles and flee.

Family members said Rajwar, an employee of Sarubera Colliery, had returned home to Ichakadih after work and later went to the feeder breaker site after hearing about the elephants.

Later the same night, the herd entered a residential locality along Ara Kata Road Number 4. As loud trumpet sounds echoed through the area, residents rushed out of their homes in fear. Amid the confusion, two women — Parvati Devi and Savitri Devi — were trampled to death by the elephants.
