In a significant political development ahead of the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections, senior leader and former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah has reportedly resigned from the Indian National Congress.
Sources said Borah has sent his resignation letter to AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge. However, neither the All India Congress Committee nor the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has officially confirmed the development.
Party insiders described the reported resignation as a “serious setback” for the state unit, which is preparing for a crucial electoral contest in 2026.
Political speculation intensified after reports suggested that Borah could formally join the Bharatiya Janata Party on February 20. Though there has been no official confirmation, the timing of his resignation has sparked discussions across Assam’s political circles.
Soon after submitting his resignation, Borah removed his Congress designation from his profile on X, a move widely seen as an indication of his departure from the party.
Borah has had a long association with the Congress in Assam. He represented the Bishnupur constituency as a Congress MLA from 2006 to 2016 and emerged as a key organisational leader in the state unit. On July 24, 2021, he was appointed president of the APCC, a role he held during a challenging period for the party.
His tenure as state Congress chief coincided with efforts to rebuild and strengthen the organisation after successive electoral setbacks. The reported resignation now adds a fresh layer of uncertainty to the party’s preparations ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
