The body of former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee will be donated to NRS Medical College and Hospital for research, fulfilling his long-held wish.
The former Marxist leader’s remains were draped in the CPI(M)'s iconic red flag and taken from his modest Palm Avenue residence in south Kolkata on Thursday.
Prominent leaders, including Governor CV Ananda Bose, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Left Front chairman Biman Bose, and CPI(M) state secretary Md Salim, paid their respects at his residence.
His grieving wife, Mira Bhattacharjee, accompanied the hearse carrying the leader’s body, along with party leaders and a large crowd of admirers across the political spectrum.
The procession made its way to Peace World mortuary, with the body set to visit key locations before its final donation.
On Friday, Bhattacharjee’s body will be taken to the West Bengal Assembly, followed by a visit to the CPI(M) state headquarters, Muzaffar Ahmed Bhavan, where the public will be able to pay their respects.
The body will then be taken to the DYFI state headquarters, the youth wing of the CPI(M).
Finally, Bhattacharjee’s remains will be handed over to NRS Medical College for research, honouring his commitment to science and education. The former chief minister had also pledged to donate his eyes.
