Abohar was rocked by a major security scare on Saturday after former sarpanch Jagmandeep Singh, better known as Minku Kundal, narrowly survived an assassination attempt at a wedding in Ratta Tibba village.
The attack unfolded while Kundal was attending the celebrations. Unidentified gunmen opened fire on his vehicle, but the hit failed to reach its target; Kundal was travelling in a bulletproof SUV, which absorbed the impact and allowed him to escape entirely unscathed.
This is not an isolated incident. Concerns over Kundal’s safety have been mounting for weeks, following a similar shooting in Kular village. Sources suggest that the prominent local figure had previously been threatened by gangster Arjoo Bishnoi.
Kundal is a well-known face in Abohar’s political circles, and his family’s influence has only grown recently after his wife’s victory in the Zila Parishad elections for the Kundal zone. This increasing stature seems to have made him an important target for the criminal underworld in the region.
The Punjab Police have since cordoned off the area and is meticulously viewing the CCTV footage of the marriage venue and the roads to trace the culprits. Meanwhile, the security around Kundal and his family has been enhanced to prevent the third attempt on his life.
