The quiet lanes of village Dubli in district Tarn Taran awoke to gunshots on Saturday morning when an assailant fired at ex-armyman Jaswant Singh alias Bittu at around 7 am after the latter had opened his shop on Kot Budha Road. Three shots hit Jaswant Singh in the chest, killing him on the spot. While the Pulsar-borne assailant fled, a CCTV has caught the entire incident.
The gruesome and cold-blooded murder brings to the fore Punjab’s rampant gangster culture, an angle that is sure to be probed in this murder. Jaswant’s family alleges that he had been receiving ransom calls from gangsters and killed because he refused to pay. Besides running a pesticide shop after retiring from the Army, Jaswant also worked on his farm, they said.
Sadar Patti Police Station SHO Gurcharan Singh said the incident had been captured in a CCTV installed near Jaswant’s shop, providing crucial evidence. He also said Jaswant’s body has been taken into police custody and statements of his family recorded.
“A case has been registered and the culprit will be arrested soon,”he added, and said multiple teams had been formed to nab the killer. The incident has sent waves of terror in the village, especially after recent rise in cases of extortion in Punjab. There has been increasing clamour by the people against the deteriorating law and order in the state.
