Former SGPC chief Kirpal Singh Badungar on Tuesday, quits the seven-member committee constituted by the Akal Takht, ahead of its meeting to oversee the membership drive and elections of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) office-bearers.
Badungar quit the committee a day after the chairperson of the committee Harjinder Singh Dhami submitted his resignation. Announcing his resignation, Badungar released a video message, saying that the committee has zero relevance post-Dhami's resignation.
"How can the meeting take place today without the chairperson of the committee? I don't think without the chairperson, the committee has significance and power to take decisions", he said and requested the Akal Takht to accept his resignation.
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) working committee has launched its own membership drive, defying the Akal Takht-appointed seven-member panel that was tasked with overseeing the process and elections for the party's president and office bearers.
The committee, formed on December 2 last year, had deemed the current leadership of the SAD 'unfit' to lead. Despite this, the working committee has continued its efforts, refusing to hand over control of the membership campaign to the panel.
