Nanak Ram Bhurji, a former minister of state in Uttar Pradesh and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), died on Tuesday after falling from the seventh floor of the MLA residential complex in Lalbagh, police said. He was 68. According to officials, Bhurji sustained critical injuries in the fall and was rushed to the Civil Hospital Lucknow, where doctors made efforts to revive him. However, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Police teams reached the MLA residence soon after receiving information about the incident, secured the premises, and initiated an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the fall. Officers are currently trying to ascertain how Bhurji fell from the seventh floor.
Authorities said it is too early to conclude whether the incident was accidental or involved self-harm. Investigators are collecting evidence from the scene, questioning residents and staff present at the complex, and examining CCTV footage from the area.
The news of Bhurji’s death drew a large number of supporters and acquaintances to the hospital, where crowds gathered outside. Police personnel have been deployed at the MLA residence to maintain order.
Prakash Pal said Bhurji was brought to the hospital in a critical state and later passed away. “It is not yet known whether this was an accident or a suicide,” he said.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and further details are awaited.
