Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered that a team of experts be sent to Tharali in Chamoli district to study the reasons of the disaster that struck the area on August 22.
State Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman said the CM has highlighted the need for a detailed survey in Tharali, similar to the one that was done earlier in Dharali, Uttarkashi. The aim is to understand why such disasters are happening repeatedly in the Himalayan region and how heavy rains are carrying massive amounts of debris downhill.
Experts from the Geological Survey of India, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, National Institute of Hydrology, Uttarakhand Landslide Reduction and Management Center, Central Water Commission, and the state Irrigation Department will soon visit Tharali.
Additional Secretary and Additional Chief Executive Officer-Administration Anand Swaroop has written to these institutions, asking each to nominate one expert to report immediately to the Chamoli District Magistrate.
The team will study the causes of floods and landslides in areas such as the Radibag Tehsil office, Tharali market, Kotdeep, Chapdon, Sangwada, and the Tehsil residential complex. They will also suggest long-term measures for reducing risks.
On the night of August 22, heavy rains lashed Tharali and caused the Toonri Gad drain to overflow. Debris spread across a wide area, filling several houses and shops. A young girl lost her life, while an elderly man is still missing. The residence of the SDM was damaged and many vehicles were buried under mud and sludge.
