Farmers gear up for march to Delhi on Dec 6

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher announced on Sunday that a group of farmers will begin a foot march towards Delhi on December 6, led by their leaders.

This comes after the Centre failed to hold talks with the protesting farmers about their demands, including a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP).

Farmers, under the banners of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, have been protesting at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13, after being stopped by security forces on their way to Delhi.

Pandher shared that the first group of farmers, or "jatha," will be led by Satnam Singh Pannu, Surinder Singh Chautala, Surjit Singh Phul, and Baljinder Singh.

The group will march peacefully, carrying essential items, and will stop at various locations in Haryana, including the Jaggi city center in Ambala and the Mohra grain market, before reaching Delhi. The farmers will march from 9 am to 5 pm each day and spend the nights on the road.

Pandher criticised the BJP-led government for not engaging in talks with the farmers since February 18. He emphasised that farmers do not accept contract farming and continue to demand a legal guarantee for MSP.

As the first group of farmers begins their march, farmer bodies in Kerala, Uttarakhand, and Tamil Nadu will also organise protests in their respective states. Meanwhile, SKM leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal is continuing his hunger strike at the Khanauri border.

The farmers' demands include a legal guarantee for MSP, farm loan waivers, pensions for farmers and farm laborers, no increase in electricity tariffs, withdrawal of police cases, justice for victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence, and compensation for families of farmers who died during the 2020-21 protests.
