The farmer unions who have been separated for over a year are set to meet in Patiala on January 15 in a bid to resolve their differences.
The decision comes following a meeting between a delegation of farmers, led by SKM All India leaders, including BKU Ugrahan chief Joginder Singh Ugrahan, Dr Darshan Pal, and BKU Rajewal chief Balbir Singh Rajewal, and Jagjit Singh Dallewal at the Khanauri border.
The delegation spent over 15 minutes with Dallewal, after which it was agreed that all three farmer forums – Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM All India), SKM Non-Political, and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) – would come together once more on January 15.
The leaders emphasised that despite their differing approaches, their common objective remains the same -- pressuring the Central government. Rajewal acknowledged the differences between the unions but reaffirmed that their target is the Centre.
The coordination committee, which will include representatives from SKM All India, SKM Non-Political, and KMM, aims to finalise a common minimum programme for a unified struggle under the banner of "Kisan Andolan 2.0."
Ugrahan expressed gratitude to the farmers of SKM Non-Political for their warm reception and assured them that no leader would make media statements that could reignite divisions within the movement. SKM Non-Political leader Kaka Singh Kotra also responded to the government’s claims, stating that the Centre was attempting to portray the farmer unions as disunited.
This meeting marks a turning point in the ongoing farmers' protest, signalling a potential reorganisation of the movement into a more unified front.
"Today, we have busted that myth being circulated by the government and proceeded towards forming a unified struggle that we had initiated during the Kisan Andolan 1. I hope the unions affiliated with SKM All India will join the Morcha at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders," said Kotra.
