Farmers in Punjab have intensified their protests against the AAP government’s strict action against stubble burning in the state. According to officials, two separate cases have been registered against farmers for burning crop residue in Barnala and Mansa districts.
In Mansa district, a case was filed against Daljeet Singh of Khiva Dialu Wala village, while in Barnala, a case was registered against Avtar Singh of Pandher village under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for disobeying lawful orders.
The Barnala district administration has also issued show-cause notices to the DSP of Tapa, the SHO of Tapa police station, and three other officers for alleged dereliction of duty.
The crackdown follows an inspection conducted on Wednesday by Deputy Commissioner Harpreet Singh and Senior Superintendent of Police Mohd Sarfaraz Alam in Dhilwan and Maur Nabha villages.
Tensions escalated on Thursday at Cheema village in the Mehal Kalan assembly segment, where farmers gheraoed (surrounded) a team of officials who had arrived to take action against stubble burning.
Activists from BKU (Ekta Ugrahan) and BKU (Dakaunda) also joined the protests against the government’s orders to curb stubble burning.
Farmer leader Darshan Singh Cheema strongly opposed any legal action against farmers and accused the administration of failing to adequately assess crop losses caused by natural calamities.
In response, officials stated that they were acting as per the directions issued by the district administration.
