Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) chief Dr Farooq Abdullah chaired a meeting of the party’s provincial committee to review the current issues faced by the Union Territory, officials said on Thursday.

According to party sources, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is also the vice president of the party, attended the meeting along with several ministers and MLAs. The meeting focused on party affairs, government functioning, and other public issues.

Senior Abdullah is expected to receive briefings from MLAs on various problems being faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting comes amid growing resentment among local population over the Omar Abdullah government for its failure to fulfil key promises made in the 2024 election manifesto. Major unfulfilled promises include free LPG cylinders for poor families and 200 units of free electricity for marginalised sections.

So far, the government has implemented only the free bus travel service, which is reportedly incurring heavy losses and putting pressure on the state exchequer. Some people also criticised the free bus service, alleging it is largely being misused by the settled middle class rather than benefitting the poor.

Meanwhile, transporters have threatened to launch an indefinite strike from May over the expansion of free bus services to several districts across the Kashmir Valley. Additionally, the Omar Abdullah government has been accused of moving slowly on the demand for restoration of statehood, leading to a noticeable rise in public discontent.
