In a tragic accident on the Jalandhar-Amritsar National Highway early Wednesday morning, two youths died and three others were critically injured after their car collided with a truck carrying iron rods.
The accident took place around 5 am between Kartarpur and Dayalpur. A Baleno car traveling toward Amritsar crashed into the rear of the truck. The impact was so strong that the car was crushed, and the passengers were pierced by the protruding iron rods.
The two deceased were identified as Chand (22) and Nikhil Sharma (21), both residents of Amritsar. The three others, Shubham, Kohli, and Rudra, were seriously injured. Locals and police worked together to rescue those trapped inside the car. One injured person was taken to a hospital in Amritsar, while the other two were referred to Jalandhar hospital.
Police arrived at the scene shortly after receiving information and sent the bodies for post-mortem. The truck driver reportedly fled after the collision.
Authorities have launched a search operation to trace him. Preliminary reports suggest that the truck braked suddenly because of dense fog, causing the fatal crash.
Family members said the five friends were on their way to attend a religious event at Valmiki Ashram in Shakti Nagar, Jalandhar.
A case has been registered based on family statements and initial probe. Police are also reviewing CCTV footage from the highway to determine the exact
cause and to locate the absconding truck driver, identified as Manjit Singh from Mandi Gobindgarh.
