Barely 24 hours after the West Bengal government revoked his ‘Banga Bibhushan’ — the state’s highest civilian honour — BJP Rajya Sabha MP Ananta Maharaj is now facing legal action over controversial remarks about Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
The Cooch Behar district police have registered a formal FIR against the MP following a complaint by a local resident, initiating an investigation into the matter. Police officials confirmed that the complaint, filed by a resident of Ward No. 10 of Cooch Behar municipality, accused Ananta of making objectionable statements regarding Netaji’s role in India’s freedom struggle.
Ananta, who had received the ‘Banga Bibhushan’ in February 2021, recently drew widespread criticism after reportedly claiming that Netaji had no role in India’s independence and making allegations concerning the functioning of the Azad Hind Fauj. In response, the state government issued a notification from Nabanna on Thursday withdrawing the honour, stating that his recent conduct was incompatible with the dignity and prestige associated with the award.
Amid mounting pressure, Ananta released a brief 17-second video message on social media on Thursday night, offering an apology. “I am sincerely sorry if anyone was hurt by my unintentional remarks regarding Netaji,” he said, while reiterating his respect for the freedom fighter.
The controversy comes in the wake of strong remarks by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who recently warned that no derogatory comments about Netaji would be tolerated in the state. He had directed law enforcement agencies to take strict action against offenders, including those posting objectionable content on social media.
Reiterating his stance, the Chief Minister stated, “No one is above the law,” signaling that action would be taken irrespective of position or political affiliation.
