Northern Railway has achieved another milestone by operating the first-ever food grain freight train for the Food Corporation of India (FCI) to Kashmir, arriving on Sunday, officials said.
The goods freight train arrived here in Anantnag district’s Goods terminal, bridging the key logistical challenge that prevailed for decades.
Depot officials at FCI Kashmir, K L Mina, said the train, which arrived here from Punjab, ferried more than 1,384 tonnes of food grains in 21 wagons.
They added that while the first train comprising 21 wagons reached Kashmir on Sunday, another 42 wagons of essential food commodities are expected to arrive soon.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, another freight train delivered arms, ammunition, trucks, and tanks along with artillery to the Indian army in Kashmir.
On December 16, a special train successfully delivered special excavations and heavy machinery from Jammu to Anantnag in South Kashmir.
The ADGPI in a post on X, wrote, “The Army achieved a major logistics milestone on December 16, 2025, with the induction of tanks and artillery guns into the Kashmir valley by a special military train.”
“This milestone was achieved in close coordination with @RailMinIndia, highlighting the transformative impact of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project in enabling rapid logistics build-up and strengthening operational readiness along the northern borders,” he said.
