Cuttack Rural Police have arrested five of six suspects in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a young woman from Bhubaneswar who was travelling to Kendrapara with a male friend. Announcing the arrests at a press conference on Thursday, Rural Superintendent of Police Vineet Agrawal confirmed that efforts are continuing to track down and apprehend the remaining suspect, who remains on the run.
According to police sources, the woman and her friend were driving towards Kendrapara when a group of youths intercepted their vehicle in the Nischintakoili area. The attackers reportedly assaulted her friend before taking turns to rape the woman inside the car, subsequently fleeing the scene after threatening the pair. The victim immediately reported the ordeal to the local police, prompting an immediate investigation.
In response to the complaint, four special teams were established under the supervision of a senior officer of Deputy Superintendent rank. Utilising scientific and technical assistance, the police identified and detained five suspects. Both the victim and her friend have undergone medical examinations as part of the formal investigation, while officers continue to execute raids across various locations to locate the final absconding suspect.
Superintendent Agrawal stated that authorities are committed to securing an expedited trial in the matter. He confirmed that a comprehensive charge sheet will be submitted within 90 days, adding that the police will push for strict punishment for those found guilty. He emphasised that the force treated the report with the utmost seriousness from the outset, deploying multiple dedicated teams and technical resources to ensure the rapid arrest of the suspects involved.
