Five persons have been arrested on Saturday in connection with the death of a young man inside an elevator at state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, police said. The accused were summoned to Tala Police Station for questioning on Friday and were subsequently arrested later early on Saturday.
The accused are scheduled to be produced before the Sealdah Court, where investigators are expected to seek police custody. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to police sources, those arrested include lift operators Milan Kumar Das, Biswanath Das, and Manas Kumar Guha, along with security guards Ashraful Rahman and Subhadip Das. All were employed at the hospital in various capacities.
The incident occurred late on Thursday night when Arup Banerjee had visited the hospital with his wife and young son, who had sustained a hand injury while playing at home. The child had been admitted around 3:00 am, and the family was proceeding to the Trauma Care Centre on the fifth floor for treatment.
During the ascent, the elevator reportedly malfunctioned and suddenly descended to the basement, trapping the family inside. After some time, the doors opened, allowing Arup’s wife and child to step out. However, Arup remained inside the lift.
Family members have alleged that despite repeated calls for help, assistance did not arrive promptly. After a considerable delay, Arup was eventually rescued from the elevator and rushed for medical attention, where doctors declared him dead.
Investigators are currently probing the circumstances leading to the incident, including possible negligence and lapses in maintenance and emergency response. Police officials said further arrests have not been ruled out, and additional hospital staff may be questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities have begun verifying statements obtained during interrogation, as the case continues to unfold.
