Five people lost their lives in a head-on collision between two cars on the Kaithal-Kurukshetra road, about eight kilometres from here, on Monday morning.
Adarsh police station SHO Dinesh Singh said the crash took place around 7 am near Ghararsi village. He said overspeeding is believed to have caused the accident. The impact was so severe that both cars were completely damaged. Locals had to cut open the doors to pull out those trapped inside.
One of the cars, carrying six passengers from Bubka village in Ambala, was badly crushed. Five of its occupants — Praveen, Pawan, Rajendra, Urmila and Suman — died on the spot. An 18-year-old girl, Vanshika, was seriously injured and is undergoing treatment.
Four people travelling in the other car were also hurt. They were identified as Santosh (45), Rishipal (55), Leela Devi (52) and Praveen (40). They were on their way to Mulana in Ambala for medical treatment. Police said Leela Devi had recently undergone surgery and was being taken for a follow-up.
The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem, while the injured have been shifted to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital for treatment, officials added.
