Rescue work underway after a stone quarry collapsed amid heavy rain in the aftermath of cyclone Remal, In Aizawl District, Tuesday, May 28, 2024.


In the aftermath of Cyclone Remal's devastation in the Aizawl district of Mizoram, the grim reality persists as search and rescue efforts continue to chase the elusive recovery of five missing bodies in the localities of Melthum, Hlimen, and Aibawk.


Identified as Ramdinsangi Thla (4), Lalvenhima Kum (8), Deborah Lallawmawmi Kum (11), Lalthakima Kum (42), and Matthew Lalchhanhima, these victims remain unaccounted for despite diligent search operations conducted by the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA).


Tragically, Cyclone Remal's onslaught triggered numerous landslides in the region, claiming 28 lives in its wake.

 

Yet, the passage of time has not softened the anguish of families and communities grappling with the uncertainty of their loved ones' fate.


Amidst the CYMA's persistent efforts, a looming sense of urgency prevails, as authorities had indicated a potential conclusion to the search operation by 4 pm on June 3 if the bodies remain undiscovered.
