Five youths, including a contractor from Uttar Pradesh, were found dead in a hotel room in Kurukshetra, Haryana, on Tuesday morning.
According to Kurukshetra SHO Dinesh Rana the youth had come to the city for painting work at a hotel near the district jail.
Police reached the spot after receiving information and began a probe. The bodies of all five contractual labourers were sent to the civil hospital for post-mortem examination.
Police officials said contractor Noor and four workers arrived in Kurukshetra from Saharanpur on Monday evening. They reached the city after 4 pm and checked into the hotel room. After dinner, all five men slept together in a single room. The room remained locked from inside until late the next morning, which raised suspicion among the hotel staff.
When repeated attempts to wake the occupants failed, the hotel staff alerted the manager of the hotel, who then informed the police. After the door was opened, the five men were found lying unconscious inside the room and later declared dead.
Hotel staff told the police that a coal brazier was found burning inside the closed room. Prima facie, police suspect the deaths were caused due to suffocation caused by fumes of a burning coal brazier while they were asleep in their hotel room.
The owner of the hotel has been summoned for questioning, and police are collecting further details about the deceased. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem reports are received.
