Fresh flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall have caused extensive damage to agricultural land and standing crops in Mehra village of Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district. The disaster has left many farming families struggling with heavy losses.
A farmer from the village said the latest flooding has worsened the damage caused by the July 19 floods. Large portions of fertile land that supported several families have now been washed away.
The farmer said the earlier flood had already damaged their fields, but the recent flash flood destroyed whatever was left. He claimed his family lost around 10 to 12 kanals of land, while nearly 50 kanals belonging to relatives were also swept away. He added that around 30 to 40 families have suffered similar losses after the river changed its course through agricultural fields.
Repeated spells of heavy rain have continued to erode riverbanks and farmlands, affecting the livelihoods of villagers. The shifting river channel has washed away large areas of cultivable land, creating uncertainty for farming and livestock-dependent families.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast isolated heavy rainfall in parts of Jammu and Kashmir along with thunderstorms and lightning. The weather department has advised people in vulnerable areas to stay alert as there is a risk of flash floods, landslides and localised flooding.
According to the Jammu and Kashmir administration, heavy rainfall has impacted several districts, damaging roads and public infrastructure while disrupting normal life. Rescue and relief teams have been deployed, and authorities are assessing losses to homes, farmland and public property.
Officials have urged residents living near rivers, streams and landslide-prone areas to remain cautious and follow safety advisories. Meanwhile, damage assessment work is continuing in Rajouri as affected families seek compensation and support to rebuild their livelihoods.
