People stand near debris after flash floods triggered by a cloud burst, near Manali, Thursday, July 25, 2024.

A sudden cloudburst triggered a flash flood in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district, resulting in significant damage and displacement, leaving four families homeless.

The flood, which occurred on Wednesday night, swept away three houses and critically damaged another. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported, the officials stated.

The Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Manali, Raman Sharma, confirmed the damage and stated that the Beas Kund Power House was also affected. The authorities have provided immediate financial assistance of Rs 15,000 to each of the four affected families and are making temporary arrangements for them.

"Three houses have been washed away while one is endangered," he said.

The flash flood also impacted transportation, with a stretch of National Highway-3 closed due to the cloudburst. Traffic is being diverted via Rohtang pass, and commuters are advised to exercise caution and only travel if necessary.

Additionally, 15 roads across the state were closed, and 62 transformers were damaged due to the heavy rainfall. The Shimla meteorological office has issued a 'yellow' alert for heavy rainfall in isolated areas over the next four days, warning of potential damage to structures, plantations, and crops.

The state has experienced significant rainfall, with the Jatton barrage recording 95.2 mm since Wednesday evening. Other areas, including Palampur, Naina Devi, and Dharamshala, also received substantial rainfall.

Since the onset of the monsoon on June 27, 49 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents, with losses amounting to approximately Rs 389 crore.
