Flight operations to several northern cities, including Amritsar, Jammu, and Chandigarh, were cancelled on Tuesday due to heightened security concerns, with airlines announcing a phased resumption beginning Wednesday.
Air India and IndiGo suspended services to and from these cities, along with others such as Srinagar, Leh, and Rajkot. The cancellations came in the aftermath of recent cross-border tensions and precautionary measures taken to ensure passenger safety.
In an official update posted on X at 6:07 pm on Tuesday, IndiGo said, "Scheduled operations to and from Jammu, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Leh, Srinagar & Rajkot will progressively resume from May 14. Each flight is being reinstated with meticulous coordination – ensuring every journey is seamless, secure, and on track."
These six airports were among 32 that had been temporarily shut for civilian flights following the recent military escalation between India and Pakistan. Civil aviation authorities reopened the affected airports on Monday, allowing airlines to begin reinstating services.
Air India, according to sources, is also preparing to gradually resume operations to reopened airports, while Air India Express restarted flights to Jammu and SpiceJet resumed operations to Srinagar on Tuesday.
A SpiceJet spokesperson confirmed the airline’s plan to restore connectivity to other affected airports in the coming days.
The cancellations and gradual restoration of flights are part of the broader security measures in response to recent hostilities, with officials ensuring all air travel resumes only after comprehensive safety assessments.
