A major flooding situation is developing in the Jammu division following incessant and heavy rainfall that has lashed the region for several days.
Several rivers, tributaries, and streams across the Jammu division have crossed the danger mark, while levels in other rivers had breached the evacuation mark by noon on Tuesday, raising fresh flood concerns due to ongoing rainfall.
The situation is particularly concerning in Samba district, where the River Basantar water level surged to a record 9.0 ft, well above the evacuation level, while the Devak River also crossed its danger mark of 4.3 ft, just six inches short of the evacuation level. The Bein Nallah is flowing close to the alert level of 3.3 ft.
Meanwhile, in Udhampur, the River Tawi is flowing 7 feet above the evacuation mark, its highest alarm level.
Similarly, in Kathua, the River Tarnah has touched the danger mark of 4.6 ft, while the Ujh Nallah at Panjtirthi in Kathua has risen above evacuation levels. The Ravi River is also flowing near the danger mark.
Furthermore, in Jammu district, the River Tawi at Jammu has reached an alert level of 14 ft, while the Chenab at Akhnoor is at 30.8 ft, just one foot below the flood alert. Balole Nallah remains in the safe zone, flowing 4 ft 8 inches below the alert level.
In Poonch, the Suran River, Poonch River, and Mendhar Nallah are flowing well below alert levels, though they have raised fears among the local population.
These fears are well noted by the MeT Department, which has issued the highest alert in the Jammu division following predictions of more heavy rains in the next 24 hours.
Additionally, a separate warning has also been issued for the Kashmir division, where Omar Abdullah has put all departments concerned on high alert.
