Flood waters wreak havoc in Assam, affecting over 1 lakh people.


The Brahmaputra River, along with several tributaries, has breached danger levels following relentless rainfall, severely impacting Assam and neighboring regions.

 

The Kopili, Barak, Katakhal, and Kushiyara rivers have all risen above their danger marks, exacerbating the flood crisis.

 

Floodwaters have inundated 309 villages across 21 revenue circles in 14 districts, including Tamulpur, Bongaigaon, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, and Udalguri.

 

Karimganj is the hardest hit, with 95,315 people affected.

Nagaon follows with 4,982 individuals impacted, Dhemaji with 3,621, and Barpeta with 1,109 residents suffering from the floods.

 

Near Kampur, the Kopili River is flowing perilously high, submerging around 1,005.7 hectares of cropland. In total, 3,168 people have taken refuge in 14 relief camps and centers.

 

The disaster has also affected 62,173 animals, including livestock and poultry, with 21 large animals reported washed away in Dhemaji district.

 

Rescue operations, led by local residents, civil defense personnel, trained volunteers, and local authorities, are in full swing. So far, 72 people and five animals have been evacuated by boats, primarily in Karimganj district.

 

The government and relief agencies continue to monitor the situation, providing essential aid to those affected and working to mitigate the ongoing crisis.

Assam flood: Top updates

  • According to the daily flood report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 1,05,700 people are hit due to the floods in Baksa, Barpeta, Darrang, Dhemaji, Goalpara, Karimganj, Nagaon and Nalbari districts.
  • Karimganj is the worst hit with over 95,315 people suffering
  • 5,000 people were affected in the Nagaon district and Dhemaji with more than 3,600 people reeling under flood waters, it said.
  • Till Sunday, only around 6,000 people were suffering in flood waters across four districts of the state.
  • The total number of people losing their lives in this year’s flood, landslide and storm stands at 34.
  • The administration has been operating 11 relief camps in one district, where 3,168 persons have taken shelter, and running three relief distribution centres in one district.
  • The authority has distributed 21.5 quintals of rice, 3.81 quintals of dal, 1.14 quintals of salt and 114 litres of mustard oil among the flood victims during the last 24 hours.
  • At present, 309 villages are under water and 1,005.7 hectare of crop areas have been damaged across the state, the ASDMA said.
