Flood toll in Assam rises to 18, 6 lakh affected

The flood situation in Assam remains dire with three more fatalities reported and new areas inundated, according to an official bulletin on June 3.

 

The number of affected people, however, has decreased slightly.

 

Rivers remain swollen, forcing many affected individuals to seek refuge in relief camps across various regions, the bulletin stated.

 

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that 5,35,246 people in 13 districts are still grappling with the flood's impact.

 

This is a slight decrease from the 6,01,642 people affected across 10 districts on Saturday.

 

Two deaths were reported in Cachar and one in Nagaon, bringing the death toll from floods and storms since May 28 to 18.

 

Three major rivers—the Kopili, Barak, and Kushiyara—continue to flow above the danger level, the ASDMA bulletin noted.

 

Nagaon is the worst-hit district, with 3,03,567 people affected, followed by Cachar with 1,09,798 and Hojai with 86,382.

 

Over 39,000 displaced individuals are sheltering in 193 relief camps spread across various districts.

 

Additionally, 82 relief distribution centers are operational.

 

Rescue and relief efforts are being conducted by multiple agencies, including the NDRF, SDRF, and local administration, with medical teams also deployed in the affected areas.

 

Significant damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and other property, has been reported from several districts.
