Severe flooding in Upper Assam has disrupted railway operations, with large sections of tracks submerged, prompting the Northeast Frontier Railway (NF Railway) to suspend services on key routes as a precautionary measure.
According to railway officials, train services on the Simaluguri–Namtiali and Simaluguri–Selenghat sections have been temporarily halted to ensure passenger safety and reduce operational risks. Authorities said services will resume only after floodwaters recede and the necessary track restoration work is completed.
The disruption has also affected several long-distance trains originating from Dibrugarh and Tinsukia. To maintain connectivity, multiple trains have been diverted via the Rangiya–Rangapara route. Additionally, several local passenger services have been cancelled, short-terminated or short-originated.
NF Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said efforts are underway to restore normal operations at the earliest.
"A number of local trains have either been cancelled or short-terminated. Necessary measures are being taken to resume services. Men and materials have been dispatched to the affected areas, and the situation is being monitored at the highest level," he said.
Officials added that the current high water levels have made it difficult to estimate when services on the affected routes will fully resume.
Meanwhile, the railway has put in place arrangements to assist stranded passengers. Food packets and drinking water are being distributed, and ticket refunds are being processed for eligible travellers.
To ease passenger movement, buses operated by the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) and other local vehicles are being deployed from Namtiali to Sibsagar Town railway station. From there, a special train service has been planned to transport passengers towards Dibrugarh and New Tinsukia.
Authorities said restoration work will continue on a priority basis once conditions improve.
