The northeastern states of India remain in the grip of a worsening natural calamity, as continuous monsoon rains have unleashed widespread flooding and landslides. As of 4 June 2025, at least 44 lives have been lost and more than 6.5 lakh people displaced across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and adjoining regions.

Assam the worst hit

Assam remains the most severely affected, with over 6.33 lakh residents impacted in 21 districts. The worst-hit district is Sribhumi, with 2,31,536 people affected, followed by Nagaon (99,819) and Cachar (89,344). In total, 1,506 villages across 69 revenue circles are inundated.

A total of 223 relief camps are operational, sheltering 39,746 displaced individuals, while 288 relief distribution centres are providing essential supplies. Around 14,739 hectares of cropland are under water, resulting in significant agricultural losses. Seven rivers, including the Brahmaputra, are flowing above danger levels at various locations. The Katakhal River has breached its highest flood level at Matizuri in Hailakandi district. Two embankments have been breached and three others damaged, severely impacting road, railway, and ferry connectivity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reviewed the flood situation with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, assuring full central support. CM Sarma visited the affected Cachar district and instructed the administration to expedite relief operations. He also underlined the importance of wetland conservation in flood mitigation.

Manipur grapples with severe damage

In Manipur, flash floods have displaced nearly 20,000 people and damaged over 3,300 homes, especially in the Imphal Valley. The Imphal River breached its banks, submerging residential zones. Army and NDRF teams are engaged in evacuation and relief operations. The estimated losses in the state alone are pegged at over $20 million.

Sikkim’s tragedy deepens

In Sikkim, over 1,200 tourists were left stranded due to major landslides. Efforts are underway to evacuate them. A devastating landslide in Chaten, North Sikkim, claimed the lives of three Army personnel, while six others, including a commanding officer and his family, remain missing.

Arunachal Pradesh villages cut off

In Arunachal Pradesh, four remote villages—Embo Riang, Effa, Gadi Solung, and Lengdi Liyang—under the Bameng assembly constituency in East Kameng district have been cut off following days of incessant rainfall. Landslides have washed away roads and damaged parts of the Bameng Indoor Complex. Local residents are facing acute difficulties, with no electricity or water supply for the past several days.

In another incident, seven members of a family were killed after their vehicle was struck by a landslide along National Highway 13 in East Kameng.

Mizoram issues travel advisory

The Mizoram government has issued a travel advisory asking central and state officials to refrain from visiting the state until 13 June. The advisory, prompted by continued landslides, mudslides, and flash floods since 24 May, aims to prioritise rescue and relief operations. Over 212 roads remain blocked across districts, hampering access and movement.

Red alert, rescue efforts intensified

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert across six northeastern states, forecasting further heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. Citizens have been urged to follow local advisories and take necessary precautions.

The Indian Army and NDRF have rescued over 2,000 individuals across the affected states. The combined damages are currently estimated at around $20 million.
