Eminent flautist Dipak Sarma, one of Assam’s most beloved musicians, passed away in Chennai early on Monday morning after weeks of critical illness, prompting an outpouring of grief across the state. The renowned artiste, celebrated for the emotional depth and clarity of his flute compositions, died around 6:15 am while undergoing advanced treatment.
Sarma had been admitted to a hospital in Guwahati last month before being shifted to Chennai as his condition deteriorated. Despite his towering contribution to Assamese music, the veteran musician was reported to have faced severe financial hardship in recent years, leading to the state government announcing ₹5 lakh in assistance for his treatment in October.
Born in Panigaon village of Nalbari district, Sarma rose to prominence as a defining figure in Assam’s musical landscape. His flute performances—marked by their purity of tone and melodic warmth, became synonymous with Assamese cultural expression, cutting across generations of listeners and inspiring countless younger artistes.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma mourned the musician’s passing, writing on X, “Deeply anguished to learn about the untimely demise of eminent flutist Dipak Sarma, who has contributed immensely towards Assamese music and popularised flute as a musical instrument. My sincere condolences to the bereaved family members and well-wishers. Om Shanti.”
Tributes poured in from musicians, cultural bodies and admirers, many recalling Sarma’s remarkable ability to evoke emotion through his instrument and his dedication to preserving Assamese musical traditions. His legacy, they said, will remain an enduring part of the state’s artistic heritage.
