A foetus was recovered in the bathroom of a government hospital here, with a preliminary investigation revealing that a minor girl, allegedly sexually assaulted a few months ago, suffered a miscarriage on the hospital premises, officials said on Friday.
The incident occurred at Rajgarh Civil Hospital in Sirmour district on Wednesday. The minor girl was identified by the police after examining CCTV footage installed at the hospital.
As per the investigation, the girl had visited the hospital complaining of abdominal pain. She later suffered a miscarriage in the bathroom and left the premises afterwards, police said.
The matter came to light when a sanitation worker saw a suspicious object in the toilet. On closer inspection, it was confirmed to be a foetus, following which the hospital authorities informed the police.
During questioning, the girl alleged that she had been sexually exploited by a young man. On the basis of her statement, police registered a case against the accused and initiated an investigation, officials said.
The foetus has been sent for forensic examination. Police said the gestational age is prima facie estimated to be between four and five months, though official confirmation is awaited.
