The Uttarakhand High Court took up a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on the forest fires happening in the state. Environmentalist Professor Ajay Rawat was supposed to speak before the division bench of Chief Justice G Narender and Justice Subhash Upadhyay through video conferencing and guide the court on steps to prevent forest fires.

But because of network problems, he could not join the hearing. He asked the court to set December 10 as the next date of hearing.

Upadhyay said he would come to court in person on December 10 and share his suggestions. The court then fixed December 10 as the next hearing date.

During the hearing, the amicus curiae told the court that since 2021, the court has been giving directions to the Uttarakhand government to stop forest fires. But nothing has been carried out on the ground. The forests still burn badly during every fire season.

The amicus further added that the compliance shown so far is only symbolic. If the earlier orders were actually followed, forest fire cases should have gone down between 2021 and now.
